The Preschoolers Community Group is losing sleep. Their three-foot tall, two-footed, adorable alarm clocks are popping out of bed at the crack of dawn, or earlier. I feel their pain. When my son was 3, he woke up promptly at 6:03 every morning as if he had a job to head off to. By noon, he was cranky and spent which doesn’t work well since preschool ends at one o’clock.
So how do you keep your 3-year-old in bed until a reasonable time? Here’s what worked for us. I bought a digital clock with extra large numbers. I covered the minutes with paper and tape, lots and lots of tape so he couldn’t take it off. I instructed my son that until he saw a 7, he had to go back to bed. If he had to use the restroom, he should go, but unless the clock said 7, he needed to return to bed. I told him he should try to close his eyes and go back to sleep, but if that didn’t work, he should grab a book from his shelf and quietly read. When he saw a 7, he could get up and come knock on our door.
This tip has also been known to work for kids who don’t yet know numbers but who can match objects that look alike. Just draw a 7 on the paper used to cover the minutes and explain to the child that when the numbers match, he can get up for the day.
My son is 4 now and knows about the hours and minutes on a clock, so I’ve since removed the paper. But there’s more to the story; recently, we lost power during a thunderstorm and the clock in my son’s room was accidentally reset 15 minutes behind the actual time. The first morning, I didn’t notice, but the second morning my son knocked on our door promptly at 7:15 brought a sly smile to my face. Those extra 15 minutes are blissful. I’ll reset his clock to the right time….someday….
What are your tips for helping your preschooler get a full night’s sleep?

The secret to unlocking creativity & joy: Do something!
Two weeks ago a bright yellow little book titled The Book of Doing: everyday activities to unlock your creativity and joy was delivered to my doorstep.
As its title implies, it's a book about rolling up your sleeves and tackling small creative projects -- with lots of bite-sized ideas to inspire you to take action.
As I quickly flipped through the pages, I couldn't help but be drawn in by the gorgeous illustrations (no org-porn photos to "inspire" and simultaneously paralyze, yippee!). The author's tone was smart and friendly; reading the project ideas kind of made me feel like I was sharing a few daydreams over a cup of coffee with a good girlfriend.
And the author's personal journey gave me even more reason to love what was there.
By day, she's the Publisher of Advertising Age.
Like so many of my good friends, she had a vague sense that something was missing as she approached her 40th birthday. While happy in her career, her creative side was languishing.
She wondered if she should quit her job to try to find her passion.
In the end, she found that simply doing things, small projects, like baking cupcakes with her daughter, unlocked the joy and the childlike sense of wonder that had been missing from her everyday, spent mostly in meetings and in Power Point. As she looked at her life as a whole, she realized it, too, was an arts-and-crafts project -- only as colorful, interesting and exciting as she made it.
So she starting doing more.
And the joy she found in doing spilled over into every area of her life. And led to her write the book, which is now inspiring others to do the same.
I won't lie - I've had more than my fair share of "what am I DOING with my life?" existential crises over the past two years (I turned 40 in 2012). So I decided to put some of her ideas to the test to see if they'd help clear some cobwebs from my own mind.
There were so many projects to choose from.
In the end, I found I couldn't stop at just one. Here's what I've been up to these past two weeks:
Honestly - I, too, felt the energized and a surge of joy from simply doing. I highly recommend it!
Have you ever felt like something was missing - stuck in a rut? Do you think a creative, hands-on project could help you snap out of your funk? If you have a go-to project, I'd LOVE to hear it.

Working moms laugh and smile more than SAHMs
In her guest column, titled The Triumph of the Working Mother, Stephanie Coontz lays out what she sees as clear evidence that working mothers are less depressed and angry, more inclined to smile and laugh, or at least remember smiling and laughing, than those moms who stay at home with their children.
The very fact that an article claiming working moms are less depressed and angry than moms who stay at home has the word "triumph" in the title, is more than a little unsettling to me.
What, if it is true, is so triumphant about the thought of millions of depressed and angry stay-at-home mothers?
Obviously the well-being of mothers is worth talking about. Whether moms work or not, the topic of mama rage, anti depressants, and moms self-medicating with wine comes up an awful lot on mom forums. As a mom who's resorted to Prozac more than once, I am personally curious about what's driving this perpetual unease and how it relates to stress and motherhood.
I would also love to know if the well-being of fathers is being so closely scrutinized and if, with the everpresent shifting of the tides, it ever will.
Lastly, if it's true that all these moms are so miserable at home, how can we better support them? How can we better support all mothers? That to me is just as important as making sure moms who work are seeing improved family leave policies.
Do you believe working moms are "happier" than SAHMs? If so, do you have any insight as to why that might be? Is it as simple as getting respect, and external reward, for your time and energy?
"In a 2012 Gallup poll, stay-at-home mothers in low-income families were less likely than employed moms at the same income level to report that they had smiled, laughed, or enjoyed themselves “yesterday.”Coontz bolsters this theory of increased well being for working moms with plenty of definitive-sounding statements, including:
"At all income levels, stay-at-home mothers report more sadness, anger, and episodes of diagnosed depression than their employed counterparts."
"Employed moms spend fewer hours per week with their children than stay-at-home mothers, but they spend more time with their children than homemakers did in 1965!"
"A recent multiyear study by the sociologists Adrianne Frech and Sarah Damaske found that women who worked full time following the birth of their first child had better mental and physical health at age 40 than women who had not worked for pay."No links are provided to the sources of these claims, and I, for one, am not about to start digging up and analyzing data from over 50 years of studies. Because, aside from agreeing that working mothers should not, after all this time, still be seeking validation for their "choices," I don't quite understand why we need to be comparing them, by going head to head with stay-at-home-moms, in a competition of who enjoys themselves more, in order to get them the support they need.

Mom saves baby after stroller rolls onto tracks
You’ll never see a mom move as fast as she does when her child is in trouble.
Earlier this week a mother leaped after her child when her stroller rolled off a Philadelphia train platform and onto the tracks below.
A surveillance camera caught the whole thing. The jogging stroller starts to roll away and the mother, who appears to be distracted, notices just as the stroller topples over about 5 feet below.
She jumped down onto the tracks, unstrapped her 14-month-old daughter and handed her to another awaiting passenger who ran over to help. Yet another bystander hits the emergency call button to alert officials, and stop the oncoming train. Everyone was hustling to help this child.
As I watched the video I literally gasped watching the stroller fall off the platform (which are slanted for drainage purposes). I can’t imagine what must have been going through that mother’s mind, but I sure as heck would have jumped in after my child—I’d like to think after any child—just as fast.
If that’s not terrifying enough, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened and been caught on video. It’s occurred at least twice before in Australia in 2009 and in 2010. In both of those situations the train came and ran over the strollers, but miraculously, the children were ok.
The little girl in Wednesday’s accident went to the hospital to be treated for a cut on her head, but she’s ok as well.
Thank goodness none of these cases ended tragically, but it’s still frightening to watch, and horrifying to think what could have been.
With stories like these, it’s easy to want to blame the mother for not paying attention, but I can’t help but feel like this could happen to anyone. It only took seven seconds for this baby to roll off a platform. It’s a reminder to us all to keep our stroller wheels locked, and remember that anything can happen in a matter of seconds.
My faith in humanity was a bit restored watching as how so many people jumped in to help this mother.
I’m sure we’d all jump off a platform to save our babies, but what if it was someone else’s would you help them?

Know your Cloth Nappies
My name is Helen and I’m a cloth nappy connoisseur which is a nicer way of saying I’m addicted to cloth nappies. The first thing you should know about cloth nappies is they are as easy to use as any disposable but have less impact on both your wallet AND the environment. Remember your child is going to live on this planet after you have gone and what we do right now will affect their way of living so lowering the amount of disposable nappies being placed in landfills for hundreds of years is a bonus for the future of many families, including your own great great grandchildren!
Another thing, and I won’t hide this one, is becoming a cloth nappy user can be a bit of an addiction. So many beautiful colours, designs and brands you just cannot help yourself at times. But don’t worry I’m here to give you the top five nappies you can find at The Baby Show NEC that are super cute, easy to use, light on your wallet and even worth you giving night time cloth a go too!
gNappies – Stand M18
gNappies are a sized nappy which comes with an outer case and then a waterproof breathable pouch. The pouch holds the insert and the bonus of gNappies is you have the option to use cotton inserts to reusable over and over again OR disposable ones. You may think that’s odd to go cloth and use disposable inserts but gNappies disposable inserts decompose faster than a banana skin! You will have to buy different sizes as your child grows but the bonus is they will fit perfectly and if you’ve not had a leak then you can just place a clean pouch and insert in to the outer part of the nappy and use it again!
Fuzzibunz Perfect Size – Stand M30
The Fuzzibunz Perfect Size nappy is simple to use and will give a nice slim fit. If you are looking for quick drying and easy to use then this could be the nappy for you and your little one. You can choose from an assortment of colours that suit girls, boys and even unisex for those who are having a surprise.
Close Parent Pop-in – Stand K26
A one-size nappy which means usually it will fit from birth to potty age. The Pop-in comes in a choice of minkee or bamboo inserts with the minkee being quick drying and bamboo being great for big wetters. Close Parent also do a night time booster which you can add to your Pop-in nappy to make it a night nappy and have the option of all sorts of lovely colours and 4 different prints.

Tots Bots Bamboozle Stretchies – Stand M10
A two part nappy which means this requires a wrap, something Tots Bots also sell. Bamboozle Stretchies come in different sizes and colours but all of them are made with bamboo and this is why I have picked this nappy on this list and recommend it as a night time nappy. You can also buy bamboo boosters but chances are you’ll find the nappy and the insert it comes with to survive a night with no problems.
Bum Genius Freetime – Stand K20
I have chosen this nappy for this list because it’s a great example of how easy cloth nappies are. No need to worry about the inserts as they are sewn in to the nappy and you can change the size or turn them over to have extra absorbency in the middle, back or front. This is a one-size nappy so will last a good long time and not only comes in so many colours and designs but also have the option of aplix (which is like Velcro) or poppers depending what you prefer.

5 Top Tips for Expectant Dads
Whether you have just found out you are expecting, or you are counting down the days till your little one’s arrival, here are some top tips for making sure you are prepared.
Bond with your baby before they are born
By 24 weeks your unborn baby can hear sounds from outside. This means for most of the pregnancy, your baby can hear your voice. They will know who you are and already be bonding with you.
Once Baby is born, when you talk to her, she will recognise and respond to your voice from the times she heard it during pregnancy. Therefore, obviously the more she has heard you speaking during pregnancy, once she is here your voice will be more familiar to her. This is brilliant in terms of being able to calm her when she arrives –making it easier for you to calm and soothe her when she is here in your arms.

Attend antenatal appointments
As long as your partner is happy with you being there, attend as many of these as you can. The antenatal scans in particular are a great opportunity to see your baby and how they are growing. They will help you start to visualise your baby and bonding with them. As men, we find it hard to attach to things we can’t see, hear or touch.
Find and go to antenatal classes which suit you bothYou and your partner should have a chat about what kind of birth preparations you would like to do, as there are a wide range of antenatal classes now available to help you prepare for the kind of birth you would like to have. Research what classes that are available in your area and make sure you attend the ones that suit how you feel the about your birth – if you are hoping to have a birth without using medical drugs, then it makes sense to attend a class which specifically teaches ways of making this more likely through learning specific techniques and skills.
Have a birth plan
Ignore those that tell you ‘there is no point having a birth plan’ as this simply isn’t true. Work on your birth plan together and research the choices available. Trust me, there are more decisions available to be made in relation to pregnancy and birth that you can probably imagine.
From where you would prefer your baby to be born, to whether you would like delayed cord clamping after the birth – a birth plan isn’t all about pain relief or type of birth. Your role is to try and support, as far as is reasonably possible, the birth plan to be heard but you can only fulfill this role, if you have a plan to start with.
Take as much paternity leave as you can
Paternity leave is always something I don’t think many of us give enough consideration to in the build up to the birth of our children. Start planning early, talk to your employer and see how flexible they will be. Legally, we are entitled to two weeks paternity leave on the birth of our child, but think about extending this by using holiday entitlement.
So many of us dads are left with a hollow feeling when it is time to return to work and mums can suddenly feel very lonely and overwhelmed that all of a sudden they will be on their own.
If you do have to return to work soon after the birth, make sure you stay in touch with mum, ring her each day to see how she and baby are doing, and see if there is anything you can do on the way home. On that first day you are away, take her home some chocolates or flowers, so she knows you have been thinking of her.

Round-up: The Baby Show NEC, Birmingham 2013
Laden with bags (bargains too!) and stocked up on advice, cheery faces but weary feet departed the NEC this evening after a fab final day of The Baby Show, Birmingham 2013.
After three whirlwind days, the UK’s leading parenting & pregnancy event has come to a close. The crowds brimmed with excitement at the show’s opening on Friday morning, snaking around the NEC eagerly waiting to see Mothercare, Cosatto, Cheeky Rascals and the like – hoping to find all sorts of wonderful & innovative goodies for their new or imminent arrivals. And The Baby Show did not disappoint.
With everything from pushchairs & carriers to nappies, cots, swaddles and beyond, the range of exhibitors at the show really did cater for all lifestyles and needs. Whilst competitions like Chicco’s £250 Prize Draw, Mothercare’s Xpedior Pram Giveaway and Waterbabies Balloon Mini Challenge gave visitors the opportunity to win some exclusive show-only treats!
It wasn’t all shopping though. Feature areas like the tommee tippee Feeding Area, Fisher-Price Creche and Pampers Changing Area provided essential facilities to help everyone’s day run nice & smoothly.
Then there was the expert advice; little nuggets of baby-related gold helping reassure and educate visitors on a range of important new-born topics. Talks from the like of excellent Prof. Robert Winston, baby sleep expert Jo Tantum, teething & tooth specialists Brush-Baby and breastfeeding aficionado Clare Byam-Cook added another dimension to the show, giving guests invaluable tips & advice on The Baby Show Stage.
All of this over just one weekend. We hope that everyone who came had a fabulous time and enjoyed their day out in the Word of Baby. Next stop – London’s Olympia in a little over 5 months time – hopefully we’ll see a lot of you there too! Original Found Here.. http://www.thebabyshow.co.uk/blog/2013/05/what-a-fab-weekend/

4 Stages of Spiritual Growth - Where Are You?
In our Science of Mind class, "The Essential Ernest Holmes" this past week, I couldn't stop thinking, "Oh! That would be an amazing blog post!"
I should just say, that until one sits her booty down in a SOM class, she will never grasp how profoundly transformational these classes are. When all I can jot down 15 things from ONE class that would make an amazing blog post to teach others, I simply then want to say, "Just come to class already!"
But, sticking to my commitment in teaching what I learn, I'm writing yet another golden nugget from what I have recently learned.
That is, the "4 Stages of Spiritual Growth," and being one who likes to "know where I am," I like knowing what "level" I'm on! (Nope, still haven't let go of that yet).
1. Everything Happens to Us - We believe that life happens to us. It falls down around us and we think, "How did this happen?" Our car dies after years of mechanical neglect and we cry out, "How could you do die on me today!"
We literally blame outside factors for our mishaps, heartaches, mistakes, etc.
2. Our Good Happens Through Us - Here, we understand that WE create our realities and circumstances. We understand that there is a Law and we learn how to use the law. We have proven the law works and manifest things into our lives. We become great manifesters.
3. Our Good Happens As Us - Things lose their importance. We no longer care about the material world and we awaken to the magnificence of the spiritual presence that we are. We no longer judge and recognize that challenges are a call to prayer.
4. Our Good Happens By Us - This is a level that most humans will never achieve, and those who do rarely stay here permanently. Jesus Christ would be the closest example our world would know as one who achieved this level of being.
So, I will say, if you find yourself at level #1, I ask that you be open to joining us at class. Learn how to choose to no longer be a victim of life, and up-level to #2 where you manifest everything you want!
This year of classes have been profound for me. Every week I see my life changing. This teaching works. It changes lives. It spreads peace in the world. It's a movement and one that I am proud to be part of.

Grateful For Mothers
Yesterday was Mothers Day. Having a preteen and teen daughters, I really didn't expect much. I know that sounds terrible but if you live with teens you know exactly what I mean.
I'm happy to report I was wrong. It wasn't that my family had all this extravagant fanfare planned. On the contrary. They packed a lunch and took me to the beach. I got to spend the whole day at the beach and my girls weren't even embarrassed to be seen with me! It's amazing how I've come full circle with all these expectations from Mothers Day past. Now I totally appreciate just quality time with them. It's like finding gold it's so rare. Yes we spend time together because we live together but on Mothers Day they consciously wanted to be with me and make me happy. AHHH, I'm still basking in the joy of it all.
I also recognize that mothers aren't always biological. Many years ago when my mother exited my life I spent a few years asking the Universe for a mother. I wanted one whom would love me unconditionally, be my best friend and shopping companion, just basically be there for me. Did such a mother exist? It seems most of my friends had that. Mind you, this was before I studied Science Of Mind. On some level I guess I didn't deserve it. But that didn't stop me from asking.
Then one day I had one of those Light Bulb moments. That beautiful mother I was longing for had been right under my nose the whole time! She is my aunt Tanya. We've always been close but some magnetic force drew us together on a deeper level. My new realization hit me like a ton of bricks. She is everything a mom should be plus more.
I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to God for proving that we are all worthy and entitled to all the Abundant Gifts the Universe has to offer. I found my mom, and she couldn't be a better grandmother and my uncle too. For my beautiful girls God has entrusted me to raise. And of course my wonderful husband who is always there for me.
I live a rich and beautiful life and I am one lucky Mother!!
